Outrigger launches ‘Sustainable Summer’ in the South Pacific

Outrigger Hotels and Resorts offers guests a wide variety of onsite activations, and engages in sponsorship and collaboration with local events, all in some way related to preserving and protecting the environment, as part of the Sustainable Summer initiative.

Outrigger’s Vice President of Global Communications and Social Responsibility, Monica Salter, said the Outrigger Sustainable Summer began on June 8 for World Oceans Day and runs through August 31.

He said the platform is an extension of Outrigger’s ZONE (OZONE), the hospitality brand’s global conservation initiative that provides enriching experiences for Outrigger guests, hosts and local communities with an emphasis on healthy oceans and coral reefs.

“Throughout the Continuing Summer, fun and engaging family activities, beach cleanups, and educational offerings allow guests to share what they are learning at home with them, enabling the effort to extend far beyond the Outrigger property beach,” he said.

Some of the June activations include: Reef Planting at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort (June 10 from 3:30pm); Round the Island Beach Cleanup on Castaway Island – join the neighborhood team for a walk around the island picking up the washed trash along the beach (16 June at 2:30 p.m.); Terrace of Modern Art (TOMA) at Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger – a lively art exhibition with renowned surf photographer Zak Noyle benefiting from the Surfrider Foundation (June 18 from 18:00 to 22:00); and 6th Annual OZONE Day at the Waikiki Aquarium: fun for the whole family with a dozen ocean-themed booths from NOAA, Bishop’s Museum, and Raw Element Sunscreen to Friends Hōkūle’a and Hawai’iloa (25 June from 9:00 – 13:00 ).

Outrigger’s other Asia-Pacific resorts, Thailand, Mauritius and the Maldives, host sustainable themed events and activities throughout World Ocean Month involving hosts, guests and the community. From planting corals to building fish houses to beach and underwater cleaning and planting coastal trees and mangroves, there are so many exciting experiences to explore.

For those who prefer to live closer to “home”, there are ocean films, in-room videos, Kids Club activities and presentations on manta rays, whale sharks, turtles and coral reef conservation.

“As owner and operator of premier beach resorts in Hawaii, Fiji, Thailand, Mauritius and the Maldives, Outrigger has a front row seat to connect healthy oceans and healthy communities,” said Salter.

“The goal of Sustainable Summers is to inspire guests and hosts to take individual action toward sustainable lifestyles, which collectively make a positive impact on the future of our planet and lives far beyond this summer.”

Beyond community partnerships and guest engagement, Outrigger has invested resources into ESG (environmental, social, governance) initiatives, including benchmark metrics for energy, water and waste reduction at its properties worldwide.

This Earth Day, Outrigger announced its promise to be the first hospitality brand in Hawaii and internationally to be Green Seal certified, protecting human health and the environment through conservation efforts and indoor air quality.
