It is often difficult to pinpoint where this festival came from, which was created to celebrate the full moon. To this day, this remains a mystery. If you go to this Koh Phangan island, you will find Full Moon parties on all the different small islands located in this famous place. The main ones are HAAD RIN beach parties. On this small beach the first parties were to take place.

A full moon party is held every month of the year. On these occasions, access to the beaches is for a fee. The money collected is then used to collect:

● waste,
● cans and bottles,
● Cigarettes, etc.

Tourists who take rooms in hotels overlooking the beach generally no longer pay for access, because the hotel includes tax. The full moon also occurs in the clubs on the edge of Haad Rin Beach.

There are many places you will find on Koh Phangan starting with THONG SALA which happens to be the island’s “capital” and main port. There is Ao Nai Wok, also known as Baan Manali which is the first bay in this place. It is a quiet bay with a long strip of white sand. It is also one of the best places for surfing or kayaking. This is due to its tendency to wind all year round and its proximity to wild islands such as Ko Tai Nai and Ko Tai Nok.

There is Sri Thanu Beach, a volcanic peninsula on the south side of Haad Son and Haad Yao. It’s a nice place, even if the water quality is very average. Haad Son is a wonderful and very calm bay with a beach and high quality water. Haad Chao Phao is another small, fairly quiet beach on the west coast of Ko Pha Ngan.

You will find some beach resorts and bungalows that offer very budget rooms with all possible facilities. There are also many bars and restaurants. You can go there for a drink or for dinner. To be able to get there by taxi, it usually takes 15 minutes and about 25 minutes when it comes to motorbike. Haad Chao Phao is the perfect place for a true escape. You can also enjoy moon parties at the Pirate Bar. It is usually performed a few days before the full moon party itself.

There are many other places and beaches that you will find on Koh Phangan Island.

Ko Tao

Still called Koh Tao, it is an island about 70 kilometers between Surat Thani and Chumphon. It is 7 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide and had an estimated population of about 1,500 people in 2011. At first it was an uninhabited island, but today it has become a popular place for tourists. In normal times, the island attracts over 350,000 tourists each year.

thong nai pan

Additionally, you will also find the large island of Thong Nai Pan which offers a panoramic view of the northern side of Koh Phangan. They include the neighboring resorts of Ao Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi, two double bays with two different unusual beaches. Thong Nai Pan is the place for families with children as well as for people looking for a great beach.

If you want to swim on this island, you can do so safely all year round except for the monsoons from November to mid-December. On both beaches there are many restaurants which are very specialized in relation to Thai and international cuisine.

beach bottle

Also known as “Haad Khwat”, it is undoubtedly one of the most secluded beaches on Koh Phangan, just like Ang Thong, which is about forty kilometers from the island. The latter is a park consisting of 42 small virgin islands and is part of the basic excursions at the beginning of the islands of Koh Phangan. From their beaches, you can actually enjoy the small islands of Ang Thong.

Bottle Beach Island can be reached by walking for 2-3 hours if you leave Haad Khom Beach. This place is very quiet and has few rooms at reasonable rates. This is a beautiful and fairly spacious beach with white sand and natural water for swimming, even in the dry period. However, due to its isolation, you will not find ATMs or restaurants. We’ll have to prepare everything before we go there.

The perfect time to travel to Koh Phangan

The ideal time to visit Koh Phangan is from December to March, when the water level is high, free of all litter and suitable for swimming. During this period, it also does not rain and you will benefit from a very pleasant temperature. You can also go there in July/August after the dry season.

On the other hand, it is especially recommended not to go there during the dry season from April to June. Indeed, during this time, all the most beautiful beaches on the northwest coast are less suitable for swimming. So you can’t swim like you should during this season at this level. However, you can go to the north coast at Bottle Beach.

In relation to the south coast, the quality of water and sand is not better. That is why it is advisable to avoid them all year round. You can reach the island by boat, train or plane. It all depends on your budget.
