a barrier. Fifty Ocean: 50 ft (15.24 m) trimaran – sailing

  • 1 What is Ocean Fifty?

  • The Ocean Fifty or formerly Multi50 is a class of marine racing vehicle 50 feet (15.24 meters) long. It’s just as comfortable outside on the lounge chairs as it is on the inhabited Grands Prix. In 2007, when the 60-foot-tall Orma trimarans were no longer popular (too high budgets, frequent breakouts, etc.), these small, affordable multi-hull structures joined forces. So that paranoia does not win this class of boats, a strict gauge is put in place, for example, it is forbidden to tilt the masts, hydraulic components, as well as honeycomb materials. In 2017 especially, the Multi50 class took a new turn with the ousting of the oldest units and the advent of foil. Then some molds, considered quite old, join the Multi2000 or Rhum Multi class in the famous transatlantic race between Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre. In 2021, the class decided to revolutionize it with a new name (Multi50 became Ocean Fifty), a new custom circuit and regulated arrival on a custom circuit, the Pro Sailing Tour that alternates with beach and sea races.

  • 2 The main characteristics of the circumference of fifty

  • Ocean Fifty is 50 feet long (maximum length 15.24 meters). These are prototypes but should respect a scale that is published each year. The Ocean Fifty is limited to ten: 15 meters long and 15 meters wide. To stay within reasonable budgets, the scale regulated the use of certain materials for construction: fiberglass, carbon fibre, wood, aluminium, epoxy resin, and erex foam. Quentin Vlamycnk’s Ocean Fifty even incorporated Elium resin (a recycled thermoplastic) that was used on all edges of the crank as well as the cockpit and cockpit. At the same time, they prohibited tilting of the masts, limited the carbon to certain fixtures, the number of attachments to 4 (two rudders, two rudders, or shims) and six sails.

    • Width: 15.24 m max
    • Project 3.50 m
    • Air draft: 23.77 m
    • Sail area (Max.): 200 m² downwind to 250 m² downwind
    • It is forbidden to tilt the mast
    • Carbon is limited on some formulas
    • A maximum of four appendices: two flaps and two daggers (or flakes)

  • 3 What are the strengths and weaknesses of Ocean Fifty?

  • These Ocean Fifty boats are designed for single-handed deck chairs in the open sea. Malouin Franck-Yves Escoffier was one of the most enthusiastic defenders and players (two-time winner of the Route du Rhum in 2002, 2006 and three Transat Jacques in 2005, 2007 and 2009) of this category: “J’ve done Figaro, Ultime, match- racing, Class40 on the Rhum road and I find a little bit of it all in Ocean Fifty, it’s really cool. There’s all the extremes here. We’re sailing with two meets and with a crew of up to five people, there are coastal and sea courses. And solo!” explains British captain Sam Goodchild.

Various formats for races and attractive logical budgets for small and medium businesses.

    Rollover risk

    Rollover risk

Like all multiple structures, it can tip over. Especially solo abroad. It happened again in April 2021 at a distance of 1,000 miles from Les Sables and Armel Tripon who found themselves with a capsized boat 30 miles from A Coruña. Or on the Road Rom 2018 with Lalou Roucayrol in a fierce, oversold shriek, wave a little stronger and take off!

If Ocean Fifty is simple and easy to handle solo sailor, it’s not always easy to find the brakes.

  • 4 Who designs and who builds?

  • Four architects worked on the plans for these 50-foot-high plots: whether it was Guillaume Verdier, VPLP, Lalou Roucayrol or Romaric Neyhousser, each managed to meet the expectations of the master.

Platform in X (such as Arkema 4 by Quentin Vlamynck), structure in K (such as Koesio by Erwan Le Roux) or more classics such as “Primonial”, “Groupe GCA – 1001 smiles” and “Solidarity in Peloton”, the search for performance I’m still here.

On the site side, five of them tried their hand at it: CDK Technologies at Port-la-Forêt and Lalou Multi, JPS Production CN Larros but also Persico in Italy and Thibaut Vauchel-Camus until they arrived in Dubai at the Enata Marine shipyard to manufacture ‘soldiers’ In subfamily – Arseo”.

  • 5 Cause budgets

  • One of the advantages of this category of Ocean Fifty is its accessibility in terms of budget. In 2021, the cost of the new boat will be between 2.5 and 3 million euros, compared to 6 to 6.5 million euros for the modern Imoca.

The operating budget for a 50-foot boat is between €400,000 and €500,000, and boat depreciation is not included. As for the second-hand market, it allows you to buy a good boat between 850 thousand euros and one million euros.

These are projects at the human level that, thanks to the secure platforms, allow entry of partners and give a taste of the sensations of the multi-hull, in particular peak speeds of more than 35 knots with a crew.

  • 6 Which circuit is this Ocean Fifty for?

  • The Ocean Fifty category is dynamic, and it is represented mainly by skippers. To be between the boats of the Vendée Globe (Imoca) and the Ultimes, their big brothers, the class played a different card while creating a new circuit. In 2021, the Pro Sailing Tour was born: four stages from Brest to Jean Canaria via La Rochelle and Toulon. With a new goal: to produce a series of documentaries for television at the heart of the action. At each race, the crew rides a media man to bring the sail back to life from the inside.

Ocean Fifty is built for the open sea and the lounge chairs in particular. The Route du Rhum is a race acclaimed by the skippers of these multis. Although they’ve been at the start of this race since the first release in 1978, these Multi50s weren’t rated until 2002.
